These Area Locales Rank Among Highest For Rent In Upstate NY

Several local locales are seeing rent prices skyrocket, according to a newly released report from UpstateNewYork.com, which assessed the average rent of New York locations.

According to RentCafe, in June, the average rent was up to $1,495 per month, an increase of 3.2 percent over last year.

Using data from the latest U.S. Census, New York Upstate determined the most expensive places to rent in upstate New York, including a pair of communities in the Hudson Valley.

The report only includes locales from upstate - which is considered by the website to be areas north of Westchester and Rockland Counties.

Middletown - Orange County (first overall);

  • Median rent: $1,126;
  • Occupied housing units: 10,302;
  • Total renter-occupied: 4,637 (45 percent);
  • Average people per rental unit: 2.5.

Newburgh - Orange County (second);

  • Median rent: $1,118;
  • Occupied housing units: 9170;
  • Total renter-occupied: 6238 (68 percent);
  • Average people per rental unit: 3.0.

Poughkeepsie - Dutchess County (third);

  • Median rent: $1,095;
  • Occupied housing units: 12,668;
  • Total renter-occupied: 8204 (64.8 percent);
  • Average people per rental unit: 2.4.

Beacon - Dutchess County (sixth);

  • Median rent: $1,069;
  • Occupied housing units: 5,142;
  • Total renter-occupied: 2,092 (40.7 percent);
  • Average people per rental unit: 2.2.

Port Jervis - Orange County (eighth);

  • Median rent: $960;
  • Occupied housing units: 3,418;
  • Total renter-occupied: 1,593 (46.6 percent);
  • Average people per rental unit: 2.2.
